In 2009, Coraline hit cinemas, a film known for its eerie and bone-chilling themes. When the movie first came out, the New York Times calling it something that ,“lingers in an atmosphere that is creepy, wonderfully strange and full of feeling”(NYT).The original storyline follows a young girl whose parents tend to neglect her, caught up in their work or their own agendas. Coraline stumbles upon a tiny door in her living room and is met with a whole new world where she meets her “other mother”,who promises to give her the love that she craves. However, As the movie progresses, the protagonist realizes this world is not all it seems.Coraline must muster the courage to defeat the “other mothers” by winning at a game against her. In doing so, Coraline will then be able to find her way back home and save her real family.
The year 2024 marked the fifteen- year anniversary of the movie’s release. Laika, the film producers, wanted to celebrate the film by creating a 3D version that highlights higher-quality media for its views. So, what changes did they actually make? The film creators wanted to make sure it was easier for the auditions to see the world that they had envisioned in their heads, so they filled in details that were missing, such as the areas originally left black and white or parts of the movie that were highly pixelated. The designer also wanted those who had interest in the creation to understand how they brought characters to life. In the remastee, which they brought to theaters for only the last days of August, they give behind-the-scenes insight how they build their stop-motion puppets. The formation of these stop-motion puppets dynamite change while trying to construct a 3D version of the movie, especially regarding the “other mother” and making it seem like she is almost popping out the screen at the auditions.
While fans of Coraline did not get a whole new sequel movie, seeing there are no changes made to the original plot. Coraline still finds the door and goes through the same moments of bravery and growth, but lovers of the film were able to see a re-colored high-quality version of the movie. Laika described this newest edition as “a heartfelt love letter to LAIKA fans” (Stock Titan.) allowing supporters to be reminded of a beloved work of art.
