“I wanted to love them sooo bad, but one of the ingredients is like kryptonite to wolf spiders!” This was what a deleted Sephora Review published in January of 2024 by “charrcharrr” stated about a Sol de Janeiro product they used. Sol de Janeiro is a famous beauty company in Manhattan, New York.
This company sells skin and body care products for people who enjoy caring for themselves. They have fragrances, body oils, and body lotions; they have anything you need! Sol de Janeiro has eight unique fragrances, but there has been some conspiracy about a certain scent. Many buyers say that Scent 59 has been attracting some spid
ers, but some claim that this is false information. So, is this rumor a myth, or is it true? Are sales going to be interrupted by this rumor spreading? What does this mean for the company? Let’s take a look!
This spider-attracting rumor started spreading in late 2023/early 2024. In a deleted Sephora review published in January, user “charrcharrr” stated, “If you’re scared of wolf spiders- watch out for these lotions lol … like kryptonite to wolf spiders… Normally I’ll see one every like 3 years, used this and it was every day. I stopped using it and haven’t seen one since”. This review was l
eft under the Delicia body lotion, which soon led to people believing that the perfume also attracted spiders. As a result of this post, many vulnerable people started getting worried and scared because who wants wolf spiders inside their house following them? Some people on Reddit also stated that they removed the product from their Sephora cart or are not from that brand anymore.
However, some people were suspicious. Did the perfume attract spiders? In a TikTok video posted on February 10, 2024, user “solde.janerio” posted them taking a sample of products from Scent 59’s fragrance and body lotion onto a baby wipe. After getting the product onto the baby wipe, they placed the baby wipe into a dirty tile-filled area and cut the video at the point saying that the results would be posted on a later video. The second video with the results was posted a day later on February 11, 2024. The baby wipes were clearly in the same spot with no visible spiders. Therefore, the theory is summarized as follows: the scent does not attract spiders.
A couple of weeks ago, I experimented with the perfume to see if the myth was true or false. I went inside my basement, covered with spiders around the wall trims, and sprayed some of Sol de Janeiro: Scent 59 perfume into the air near the spiders. The experiment was conducted differently than in the video, but the results remained the same. I rechecked the area a day later, but to my surprise, the spider had moved to a position further away from the fragrance than attracted to it.
Another video on TikTok, posted on December 29, 2023, by user “addiedracedillon”, had a comment from the Sol de Janeiro company themselves. This comment stated, “hey babe! Of course this rumor is untrue! None of our products, including Delicia Drench + 59 Mist contain these alleged arachnid attracting ingredients.” This comment was made on the same day the video was posted, December 29, 2023. If Sol de Janiero had sent false information to the media, it would have been proven wrong, and Sol de Janiero would have been in a courtroom.
To summarize, Sol de Janeiro products do not attract spiders. This rumor is completely false, and there are many videos on the internet proving this rumor. Sol de Janeiro will continue to sell its beauty products regularly, and it will be up to the customers if they want to purchase from the brand or not.
