Lost in space? Mentally you might be, but Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore are actively stuck in space. On June 5th, 2024 Suni and Butch embarked on mission 71/72, to test the safety of the Boeing Starliner and how it would react to more regular use. They were originally supposed to be in space for 8 days, but due to technical issues, the original date of return has now been postponed to late March of 2025. And this is not the first time it has been postponed, it has been delayed a total of three times since the original date of leave.
After Suni and Butch made it to the space station on June 6th 2024, Space-X decided for the safety of the astronauts, the Boeing Starline is to be returned to earth, humanless. Since that date of June 6th 2024, Suni and Butch have been in orbit on the space station. That’s eight entire months!. To put that into perspective, schools run from a range from eight to ten months when in season.
Suni Williams was selected in 1998, by Nasa, and is a veteran of two missions which include 14/15 and 32/33. She has over seven awards to reward her amazing work. She has earned a bachelor’s degree of science, more specifically physical science and science engineering management. She is well loved by her husband, and her dogs, and the people of NASA.
Barry Wilmore, more commonly known as Butch E. Wilmore is a veteran of two space missions, and throughout his expeditions has collected over 178 days of space time. He is a retired Navy Captain and an inspiration to many. He is married to Miss Deana Newport of Helenwood Tennessee, and they have two kids together. He has earned a bachelor of science, with a concentration regarding aviation systems. But that’s not all! He has also gained a bachelor of science in electrical engineering from Tennessee Technological University.
Although life on Earth may not be directly impacted, gaining new perspectives of space is essential. Learning new ways to improve healthcare, creating new jobs, enhancing the safety of people on earth, and making new scientific discoveries can open up more opportunities for many now and through the future.
