In an exciting comeback on a soaked, muddy track, Sovereignty pulled ahead late to win the 151st Kentucky Derby, giving Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott his first official Derby win at the finish line. The moment was especially meaningful for Mott, who won the Derby once before in 2019—but only after another horse was disqualified. This time, the victory was all his. This time, there was no controversy just a clean, exhilarating finish as Sovereignty made a late but very powerful surge to beat the favorite Journalism.
“This one’s a little more rewarding, obviously,” Mott spoke after the race. “We’ve always believed in this horse’s heart. I’m just so proud of him and everyone who helped bring him to this moment.”
— Bill Mott, Sovereignty’s Trainer
A Rain-Soaked Race to Remember
Starting from post 18, Sovereignty had a tough spot and plenty of strong rivals to beat. But with jockey Junior Alvaradoin the saddle, the colt handled the messy, rain-soaked track like a pro, finishing the 1¼-mile race in 2:02.31.
“He really responded when I asked him,” Alvarado said in a post-race interview. “He gave everything. I could feel he had something special in him coming into the stretch.” — Junior Alvarado, Jockey
Many were caught off guard by Sovereignty’s triumph, including oddsmakers who had placed him behind Journalism and other top contenders. But the 3-year-old colt powered through the final furlong, passing rivals with a roar that ignited cheers from a drenched but jubilant crowd of more than 150,000 at Churchill Downs.
Whip Use Sparks Debate
The celebration was soon overshadowed by controversy. Alvarado was fined $62,000 and suspended for two racing days after violating the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority’s whip-use regulations, having struck Sovereignty eight times—two over the permitted limit.
“I don’t believe I abused the horse,” Alvarado stated regarding the penalty. “I feel like the punishment is a little harsh. It was the biggest race of my life.” — Junior Alvarado
This fine, representing 10% of Alvarado’s share of the purse, is among the largest whip-related penalties handed down since new rules were implemented in 2023.
What’s Next for Sovereignty?
Even though Sovereignty won’t run in the Preakness Stakes, the second leg of the Triple Crown, Bill Mott and his team are already looking ahead. Their focus is now on the Belmont Stakes, set for June 7 at Saratoga Race Course, where they believe the colt will be an even better fit.
“He’s a horse we want to protect for the long term,” Mott explained. “The Belmont has always been part of the plan.”
While the Triple Crown hopes fade with Sovereignty’s absence in Baltimore, his Derby victory secures his place in racing history and adds a new chapter to Bill Mott’s storied career, culminating in a triumph 45 years in the making.
