With the beginning of spring eagerly rolling in, so must baseball season, which means the beginning of the season for our Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies kick off their season with head coach Rob Thomson, hoping to lead them to their third World Series win. With a degree from the University of Kansas and playing for both the St. Clair County Community College and the University of Kansas’s baseball team, from there he went on to play for the Detroit Lions. After his brief career with the Lions, he found his way into coaching, starting with Little League and moving up the rankings, resulting in his contract with the Phillies.
The Phillies begin their season not only led by their coach, but also working alongside strong teammates: Kyle Schwarber, Nick Castellanos, and Edmundo Sosa are the standout two at the current moment. With a current home run count of six and an OBP (on base percentage) of .421, Schwarber sets himself and his team up for success in the future, as he leads them into high-scoring games at the beginning of their season. Castellanos begins the season with a batting average of .306, which is about .50 over the league’s overall average, allowing him to prevail as a heavy hitter on the Phillies. Sosa begins his season with high numbers all around including a batting average of .444 and a OBP of .464, setting up the Phillies for greatness and standing out as the unspoken leader of their team.
Performativley this season, the Phillies are set on a path toward possible greatness with a current second place holding behind the Mets, and a ratio of 10-7 in the National League East, the phillies prove they have potential this year. Winning many games early on, the phillies allowed themselves to be seen as a threat to other teams, however, in recent games the Phillies have seen a loss streak with their current loss streak being two games in a row. This is currently an insignificant number, but if it continues to grow, it could be detrimental for their game and stats. While it is still early in the season, the Phillies have set themselves up for a potentially good season. With strong coach Rob Thomas, strong players that can aid in carrying the team when necessary, and a decent win-loss ratio, the Phillies have potential to go all the way this year, as long as they do not let their stamina slide, and continue to put up good, winning, games.
