Through adversity and grit the Quakertown Girls bowling team finds triumph.
In previous years, the bowling team has gone 8-48.
One season ago, the team was 56-0, and the Quakertown Girl’s bowling team is currently 55-1.
With the 2024 senior girls graduation, the current team found themselves in a new era of young bowlers who are starting varsity for the first time.
However, even with the new varsity lineup, the team continued to build on its growing legacy, finishing the season with a 55-1 record and losing their first game in two years to Plymouth Whitemarsh they secured the Suburban One League Championship for the second year in a row.
The team also made a strong showing at the Eastern PA Regionals last year, placing 9th out of 24 girls’ teams on the eastern side of Pennsylvania on March 1st last year. This was the highest a girl’s team has ever placed in the Quakertown bowling archives. This year, with a new lineup of varsity bowlers, the team continued to build on its growing legacy, winning the Suburban One League again, finishing the season with a 55-1 record only losing one game (their first game in two years) to Plymouth Whitemarsh, who finished their season with a 43-13 record.
With the loss of four senior varsity bowlers—Alex Baranyai, Anya Clark, Abbie Betz, and Erin Fenstermacher—the girls knew they were facing a season of transition. The team brought out two new varsity starters, sophomores; Lauren Betz and Victoria Ostorwski, who brought a new light to the team along with three Varsity players from previous years Breanna Gardner, Goda Minasamudram and Mary-Ashlyn Wolf.
The girls showcased their growing records this year by improving their scores from last year. Breanna Gardner set a new school record this year: the highest individual game ever bowled in Quakertown history with a 269 on Senior Night January 29.
Julia Skarbowski, the team’s anchor, rolled the team’s high series of the season with a 677, with the highest series of the year.
The team is led by head coach Allen Hunsicker and assistant coach Steve Skarbowski, who has played a pivotal role in developing the girl’s team into the program it has become. The girls also put up a strong showing at the Baker Battle at Bowlero Bristol, finishing second against Bensalem High School on February 1.
With another incredible season, the girl’s team continues to prove who they are as a team. As the team prepares for their next chapter, they look forward to building on their success and keeping the program’s winning tradition alive.
Coach Hunsicker reflected on the team’s success this year quoting “We had a girl’s team that nearly again went undefeated, so one loss in the league,”
Reflecting on her last year assisting the team Jen Stover said, “I feel a lot of satisfaction and joy having been with them for three years, and watching them grow as people, grow up into adults, grow as bowlers and watching how their leadership has emerged over the time going from being 9th-10th graders to now being the heart and soul and the leadership of the team”
With their guidance, the team hopes to finish strong at Eastern PA Regionals on March 1, at Clearview Lanes in Lancaster, with hopes to improve last year’s finish of 9 out of 24 teams in the Eastern Pennsylvania region.
